Huron River Fishing

The Huron River offers a huge variety of opportunities for fisherman!

Bob with Largemouth caught opening day, 2005, and no, I won't tell you where on the river I caught it !

Bass, trout, bluegills, sunfish, crappie, carp, catfish all abound in various locations on the river.

From M-36 to the Portage Lake Dam, any boat can be used from canoes to bass boats! From the Dam south to Dexter you're pretty much limited to canoes and/or kayaks (walking the river is also popular in this area). From Dexter to just west of Ann Arbor, the river continues as fairly shallow, a pleasant trip (even a couple of rapids at Delhi Park). West of Ann Arbor through Ypsilanti you'll encounter a series of Dams with empoundment ponds large enough for small fishing boats.

Huron River Fly Fishing Club being organized!

An organizational meeting was held on January 23, 2007, to more forward with the organization of a flyfishing club focused on the Huron River, and it was agreed that we would proceed to submit an application to become a Charter Club of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF), Inc. By becoming a FFF charter club, we become a local extension of the FFF, and each member of the “Huron River Fly Fishing Club, Inc.” is required to join and maintain current membership in the FFF. Put another way, by joining the Huron River Fly Fishing Club, you would become a member of the FFF, similar to the way Trout Unlimited chapters are organized.

Please watch this site for additional announcements and directions to the meeting.

Photos from the First Annual Huron River Fly Tiers Symposium!

Each year the DNR stocks the Huron with trout (near Wixom), "BigE from Berkley" sent the following photos in 2005 (taken the weekend of April 1st) According to BigE, "Most people I saw has less luck, however the mid sized (8) white streamer I
tied was just the thing these fish were looking for."

Makes ya want to go fishing, eh?

Information on the Large Mouth Bass virus that seems to be spreading into Michigan can be found on the DNR's Web Site. Of note is that the virus is found close to the Huron (Woodland Lake in Brighton). The following is from a Detroit News Article (4/27/2003)

Biologists from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources discovered largemouth bass virus in Woodland Lake several years ago.

"We took 30 samples, and every one of the fish had it, which is incredible," said Gary Towns, an agency supervisor. Still, only 10 percent of the bass died from the virus -- a typical toll.
"We had estimated that Woodland Lake had 35 pounds of fish per acre. And sure enough, about 3.5 pounds of fish per acre were found dead. That's exactly 10 percent," Towns said. "The rest of the bass survived and created antibodies just like humans do to combat the virus."

The first U.S. evidence of the virus was detected in South Carolina about nine years ago, and much about it remains a mystery, Towns said.

It's not known to infect humans, and infected fish are considered safe to eat. But the DNR is asking boaters, particularly those who visit multiple lakes, to be extra diligent in cleaning out the bilge to prevent the spread of the virus.

Fisherman, if you've no experience with Circle Hooks, this article is worth reading:

Snake Head Fish

The Snake Head Fish is a potential problem in Michigan Waters, if you catch one, notify the DNR (identification and information can be found on this DNR web page)

The young man in front of the fish is William Coller, World Champion Trick Bait Caster.

And, when the fish finally turn the tables....
